OWINGS MILLS -- Five Baltimore Ravens were named to the Pro Bowl today, all first-round draft picks, including linebacker Ray Lewis, offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, safety Ed Reed, cornerback Chris McAlister and outside linebacker Terrell Suggs.

Suggs is the lone first-time all-star. This will be Ogden's eighth consecutive Pro Bowl appearance. Lewis, twice the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, is going for the seventh time. This will be Reed and McAlister's second Pro Bowl berths.

Suggs, last year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and No. 10 overall pick of the first round, was surprised to make it.

As for Reed, he had little apparent joy in making the game.

"The Pro Bowl doesn't make me," Reed said. Kicker Matt Stover was named a first alternate for the second year in a row.

New (Glowing) Shrooms Found in Brazil

Like a black light poster come to life, a group of bioluminescent fungi collected from Ribeira Valley Tourist State Park near São Paulo, Brazil, emanates a soft green glow when the lights go out.

The mushrooms are part of the genus Mycena, a group that includes about 500 species worldwide. Of these only 33 are known to be bioluminescent—capable of producing light through a chemical reaction.

Since 2002 Cassius Stevani, professor of chemistry at the University of São Paulo; Dennis Desjardin, professor of mycology at San Francisco State University in California; and Marina Capelari of Brazil's Institute of Botany have discovered ten more bioluminescent fungi species—four of which are new to science—in Brazil's tropical forests.

A species of bioluminescent fungi looks unassuming as it pokes its capped head above the mossy wood from which it grows in the tropical forests of Brazil. But at night a chemical reaction causes the fungus to emit an eerie green glow sometimes called foxfire.

The 33 Mycena species known to glow in the dark are separated into 16 lineages, San Francisco State's Desjardin says.

"Obviously the big question then arises: Did luminescence evolve 16 different times in the genus Mycena, or did it evolve only a few times and was lost hundreds of times during the course of evolution?" he said in an email to National Geographic News.

To help answer this question, Desjardin's research team has been extracting and sequencing DNA from the glowing mushrooms. They will use the data to develop a mushroom "family tree" that includes glowers and related nonglowers, a first step to determining when bioluminescence emerged in fungi.

Most people know what cocaine is, and now Redux Beverages in Las Vegas is offering what it calls a "legal alternative" to the illegal drug in form of an energy drink.

Jamey Kirby, the drink's inventor, says the name for the drink — Cocaine — came to him during a brainstorming session at 1 o'clock in the morning.

"It's an energy drink, and it's a fun name," says Kirby. "As soon as people look at the can, they smile."


Kirby says Redux wanted to make a beverage that would send a sensation to the mouth. He describes Cocaine, the new beverage, as a "fruity, atomic fireball" drink.

Real Cocaine?

The 8.4 fluid ounce energy booster has no actual cocaine in it, but it does contain 280 milligrams of caffeine. According to the company's Web site, the only way to get more caffeine per ounce is with an espresso.

"It's just a bad idea and has all the same downsides of too much caffeine plus a very bad name," says Dr. Charles O'Brien a professor and vice chairman of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania.

The beverage is marketed to give a person a "high" coupled with a tingly euphoric feeling within five minutes of drinking it. That initial boost is followed 15 minutes later by an energy buzz that will last five to six hours, according to the company.

Kirby claims Cocaine is "350 percent stronger than Red Bull" but that people do not experience the "sugar crash" or jitters that he says some of the other energy drinks can produce.

The Secret Formula?

Kirby confesses that a "throat-numbing" ingredient is added to the drink to emulate its namesake, but he won't divulge the identity of that add-in, saying it's confidential.

"We're getting a phenomenal response," says Kirby, crediting the can's simple design and product promotion for the drink's early success among consumers from high school kids to 30-year-olds.

The company isn't hiding from mixing Cocaine with alcohol. On the drink's Web site, www.DrinkCocaine.com, it posts a variety of alcohol and Cocaine combinations.

Kirby, who says the world is ready for a beverage named after an illegal drug, has been surprised by the lack of controversy over the name of the drink.

"These guys are innocent victims," said Cpl. Michael Hill, a police spokesman.

In the early-morning hours of Jan. 8, Herrim Geovanny Alverez Salmaron, 26, and Hever Joel Gonzalez Garcia, 27, were at Club Mate and Lounge in the 3600 block of S. Hanover St. in Baltimore, county police said. After leaving the bar, surveillance cameras captured a group of people approaching the two men, county police said.

Later that morning, the two men, both of the 2600 block of Virginia Ave., were found stabbed multiple times in a sports field behind Arbutus Middle School, police said.

William E. Ayala Salmeron, 20, and Jose Hernandez-Aguilar, 24, with no known address, are being detained out of state on unrelated charges, county police said. Police said they are searching for Victor Alfonso Argueta, 21, and Carlos Flores Garcia, 19, both with no known address. Argueta and Garcia, police say, could be out of the state.

Prince George’s County (Md.) Police Department, says MS-13 doesn’t sling drugs in his jurisdiction. “We see mostly citizen robberies, auto theft, shootings and cuttings, and homicides,” he says, adding that drug sales by MS-13 may be just a matter of time.

2 people found dead in west Baltimore. is Omally showing signs of improvment?

WJZ.com is following a developing story from west Baltimore where police have discovered the bodies of two people inside a vehicle.

WJZ's Captain Mike Perry reports the bodies were found inside a green sedan on the 2300 block of Lanvale Street. Both bodies were slumped over in the front seats of the car.

There is no word on how the people were killed, but it does appear to be a woman in the driver's seat, still strapped into her seatbelt. The gender of the other victim is not known.

Police are investigating this case as a double homicide and numerous officers were at the scene surrounding the car.

WJZ.com will continue to monitor this developing story and provide new information as soon as it becomes available.

Last year, the Baltimore City Police Department reported 269 homicides, but the State Medical Examiner's Office, which handles victims of homicides statewide, reported 275.
WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team lead investigative reporter Jayne Miller reported the medical examiner reported a raw homicide number at 288. But 13 of those are cases don't count against the city's total.
Those 13 cases include justifiable homicides and the deaths of inmates in detention. Also included are three cases in which people died in car crashes caused by suspects fleeing from a scene.
Baltimore was going for ten year with a murder rate of over 300 which respectfully ended in the year 2001.

Forty-nine of the 50 people aboard Delta Flight 5191 were killed when the aircraft crashed Sunday morning shortly after takeoff from Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, according to Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn.

Ginn said he believes most people died from fire-related causes "rather than smoke inhalation."

Flight 5191 - operated by Delta Air Lines' commuter carrier, Comair - was en route to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, where it was scheduled to land at 7:18 a.m. ET.

First responders extricated the crew's first officer - the crash's lone survivor - according to Blue Grass Airport's Chief of Public Safety Scott Lanter.

They "observed movement at the front of the aircraft, and then extricated the first officer from the nose of the airplane," said Lanter.

Comair President Don Bornhorst identified the first officer as James Polehinke.

Polehinke was in critical condition at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, according to airline and hospital officials.

There were 47 passengers and three crew members aboard the flight. One of the passengers was an off-duty crew member, sitting in the plane's jump seat, said Blue Grass Airport Director Michael Gobb.

Flight 5191 was cleared for take-off at 6:05 a.m. ET, which was the last communication between the pilot and air-traffic controllers at the airport, said Federal Aviation Administration officials.

The plane crashed about a half-mile from the end of the runway, said Bornhorst, Comair's president.

Two sources told CNN that radar identifying the plane's location shortly before it crashed indicates that it took off from the wrong runway - one that was 3,500 feet shorter than the other.

The Bombardier Canadian Regional Jet (CRJ)-200 was cleared to take off from runway 22, which is more than 7,000 feet long, said the sources.

Instead, it took off from runway 26, which is 3,500 feet long, they said.

That length is "pretty short for that type of aircraft," former National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Bob Francis told CNN.

Lanter confirmed that the crash site was at the end of runway 26 but would not speculate from which runway the flight took off.

"Part of the investigation will establish what runway they were using," said Lanter. "Based on the information we received for the incident, we don't know what runway they were using."

Asked about the possibility that the wrong runway was used, Bornhorst told reporters, "I think that is a rumor and speculation that would be not good for any of us to go down right now."

NTSB investigators could take up to a year before formally ruling on the cause of the crash.

Gobb said the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder "have been retrieved and turned over."

County Coroner Ginn said much of the aircraft remained intact, despite a heavy fire that "traveled with the plane." The airport's fire department "got there very fast ... and because of that, we're able to keep a lot of the plane intact," he said.

"We are going to say a mass prayer before we begin the work of removing the bodies," County Coroner Ginn told the Associated Press, referring to the chaplains who serve the airport.

The coroner's office has set up a temporary morgue in Frankfort - about 30 miles west of Lexington - "in order to expedite the autopsies," said Ginn. He said he is asking family members for dental records to help make identifications.

Comair purchased the CRJ-200 from Bombardier in January 2001 and said its maintenance was up-to-date.

That type of plane has a good track record, according to the NTSB Website.

Bornhorst said the flight crew had been "on a legal rest period far beyond what is required," but the specifics of the crew's schedule will be part of the NTSB investigation.

The pilot, Capt. Jeffrey Clay, began work with Comair in 1999 and was promoted two years ago to captain, said Bornhorst.

Polehinke has worked for Comair since 2002, and Kelly Heyer, the male flight attendant, had been employed with the carrier since 2004, he said.

The plane went down before sunrise and scared residents, who initially thought it was bad weather.

"I really thought it was a big clap of thunder, so (I) didn't think much about it until I heard all the sirens," said one man.

Another man described what he saw from his back door.

"Over the hillside, I saw a flash of light and then an explosion, and then just a big plume of smoke come up," he said.

In Atlanta, Georgia, most of the passengers aboard the crashed plane had planned to connect to other flights and did not have family waiting for them there, the Rev. Harold Boyce, a volunteer chaplain at Hartsfield-Jackson airport, told the AP.

One woman was there expecting her sister on the flight. The two had planned to fly together to catch an Alaskan cruise, he said.

"Naturally, she was very sad," Boyce said. "She was handling it. She was in tears."

NTSB investigators are heading to the crash site to begin an investigation.

A 12-year-old boy shot and killed himself Monday night in the basement of his Glen Burnie home, and police detectives yesterday were still trying to determine if it was an accident.
Lt. Joseph Jordan, acting commander for the Northern District, said police likely won't know for sure until the state medical examiner releases the results of an autopsy that was to begin yesterday.

The shooting happened just after 7:30 p.m. at 528 Crestpark Drive in the Rippling Estates community near Rippling Woods Elementary School.

"Club Mate" Baltimore, Md -- Do not knock it until you try it!!

I was a little worried when I headed to Club Mate. It wasn’t the sex club-like name—I’ve been burned before—or the fact that Brooklyn isn’t exactly known for its happening nightlife. It was because of the disturbing sadomasochism that seems to have taken over Baltimore’s club scene. I just can’t stand the idea that we should be on our knees thanking clubs for letting us pay exorbitant cover fees to be inside their hallowed halls. And Club Mate, with its VIP area and reserved seating, seemed like a likely spot for this sort of attitude. Instead, Club Mate manages to straddle a very fine line, by making VIPs feel like royalty without making the rest of us feel like serfs.

Finding Club Mate proved surprisingly easy on a recent Friday night—I just followed the strappy heels and flirty skits of a surprising number of sharply dressed club-goers working their way through Brooklyn. But the real surprise came when I realized that Club Mate is housed in the former Thunder Dome—making it a dance club that arose from the ashes of a hair-metal hangout.

As I headed in, one of the door guys asked me if I knew what was going on that evening? I’ve gotten that question before, usually when I take my white girl self to a local club on “urban” night. But it turns out he just wanted to let us know that there would be a large cover because Bobby Valentino was making an appearance. He even offered us VIP passes for another night if we wanted to come back then instead. But my friend is a Bobby Valentino fan, and I get reimbursed for this column, so what did I care? We paid our $20 a piece to get in but decided not to pay the additional fee for access to the VIP area. City Paper isn’t made of money.

The layout of the place is basically the same, but the front bar that used to look like a biker hangout is now a haven of crisp white minimalism, offset by velvety beanbags so large that once you sink into them it seems unlikely you’ll ever get out, especially in heels. The walls of the main room are hung with glowing orange circles that set off the plush booths, tables, and large dance floor. The roped-off staircase to the balcony is guarded by a burly and resolute-looking man. It seems impossible that these posh digs once sported inflatable dolls hanging from the ceiling.

After getting over the initial shock, I headed to the bar. The drinks were pricey but not horrifyingly so. My only real complaint is that getting a cosmo in a plastic cup is just a bit sad. The crowd was mostly, but not exclusively, African-American, and the outfits ranged from team jerseys to white button-downs, jeans to barely there skirts. Everyone was clearly dressed for a night out. With so many different looks, it wasn’t easy to stand out, but one woman managed. Dressed in white with sunglasses perched in her short hair, she made an impression on Club Mate's laid-back dance floor—while the other dancers swayed to midtempo hip-hop, she shook it like it was being banned tomorrow, going into squats that would make a personal trainer jealous. Simultaneously entranced and intimidated by Badunkadunk’s moves, my friend and I edged onto the dance floor, then quickly decided we needed another drink.

At this point, the club was starting to fill up and just getting to the bar in the main room seemed impossible, so we headed to the front bar to try our luck. Before we got there, a man in a baseball cap came up to us, said something about the VIP area that we couldn’t hear over the music, and fastened VIP wristbands on us. Surprised and more than a little bit flattered, we headed to the stairs and the rope was parted.

The VIP area was nice. Tables and couches lined the walls. A buffet was laid out with sweet potatoes and other yummy-looking comfort foods that don’t normally mix well with tight clothes. The drinks came in real glasses and there was even a VVIP section with beds. Not glorified lounge chairs, but fluffy-white-pillowed areas that looked harem-worthy.

Amid the opulence, I learned the truth about the VIP area. The people upstairs, most of whom paid extra money to be above the rabble, spent their entire time glued to the balcony watching the people below dance. And we were no different. The dance floor was now packed, and the swaying had given way to full-blown dancing led by my personal hero, Badunkadunk, who had been pulled onstage by a bouncer to show us all how it’s done. And she didn’t disappoint, dipping down and undulating like a charmed snake. After a while, a girl in a tiny black skirt and a woman in a gold satin gown were brought up as well. They tried to keep up but couldn’t, falling back on girl-on-girl freaking. Badunkadunk didn’t have to pander.

After a while, I realized that my friend and I were doing the we’re-not-dancing dance, our bodies moving a little here and a little there in time to the music. Apparently I wasn’t the only one who noticed. A guy came over and told us it was time for us to stop watching and start doing it. We couldn’t argue, so we followed him down and joined the crush of bodies. We danced the rest of the night, moving with the sea of bodies, under the gaze of those still up in the VIP area.

But as closing time approached, one thing started to bother me. Where was Bobby Valentino? He hadn’t made an appearance all night. Just as we grabbed our pre-last call drink, Valentino took to the stage. While the DJ played his music, he said, “Hi everyone, feel welcome.”
