Just one more tragic plane crash in less the a week apart. A 12-year-old boy shot and killed himself Monday night in the basement of his Glen Burnie home, and police detectives yesterday were still trying to determine if it was an accident.
This time although much closer to home.
Normally a plane accident will have Zero survivors. Fortunately Delta Flight 5191 had one.

Forty-nine of the 50 people aboard Delta Flight 5191 were killed when the aircraft crashed Sunday morning shortly after takeoff from Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, according to Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn.
Ginn said he believes most people died from fire-related causes "rather than smoke inhalation."
Flight 5191 - operated by Delta Air Lines' commuter carrier, Comair - was en route to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, where it was scheduled to land at 7:18 a.m. ET.
First responders extricated the crew's first officer - the crash's lone survivor - according to Blue Grass Airport's Chief of Public Safety Scott Lanter.
They "observed movement at the front of the aircraft, and then extricated the first officer from the nose of the airplane," said Lanter.
Comair President Don Bornhorst identified the first officer as James Polehinke.
Polehinke was in critical condition at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, according to airline and hospital officials.
There were 47 passengers and three crew members aboard the flight. One of the passengers was an off-duty crew member, sitting in the plane's jump seat, said Blue Grass Airport Director Michael Gobb.
Flight 5191 was cleared for take-off at 6:05 a.m. ET, which was the last communication between the pilot and air-traffic controllers at the airport, said Federal Aviation Administration officials.
The plane crashed about a half-mile from the end of the runway, said Bornhorst, Comair's president.
Two sources told CNN that radar identifying the plane's location shortly before it crashed indicates that it took off from the wrong runway - one that was 3,500 feet shorter than the other.
The Bombardier Canadian Regional Jet (CRJ)-200 was cleared to take off from runway 22, which is more than 7,000 feet long, said the sources.
Instead, it took off from runway 26, which is 3,500 feet long, they said.
That length is "pretty short for that type of aircraft," former National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Bob Francis told CNN.
Lanter confirmed that the crash site was at the end of runway 26 but would not speculate from which runway the flight took off.
"Part of the investigation will establish what runway they were using," said Lanter. "Based on the information we received for the incident, we don't know what runway they were using."
Asked about the possibility that the wrong runway was used, Bornhorst told reporters, "I think that is a rumor and speculation that would be not good for any of us to go down right now."
NTSB investigators could take up to a year before formally ruling on the cause of the crash.
Gobb said the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder "have been retrieved and turned over."
County Coroner Ginn said much of the aircraft remained intact, despite a heavy fire that "traveled with the plane." The airport's fire department "got there very fast ... and because of that, we're able to keep a lot of the plane intact," he said.
"We are going to say a mass prayer before we begin the work of removing the bodies," County Coroner Ginn told the Associated Press, referring to the chaplains who serve the airport.
The coroner's office has set up a temporary morgue in Frankfort - about 30 miles west of Lexington - "in order to expedite the autopsies," said Ginn. He said he is asking family members for dental records to help make identifications.
Comair purchased the CRJ-200 from Bombardier in January 2001 and said its maintenance was up-to-date.
That type of plane has a good track record, according to the NTSB Website.
Bornhorst said the flight crew had been "on a legal rest period far beyond what is required," but the specifics of the crew's schedule will be part of the NTSB investigation.
The pilot, Capt. Jeffrey Clay, began work with Comair in 1999 and was promoted two years ago to captain, said Bornhorst.
Polehinke has worked for Comair since 2002, and Kelly Heyer, the male flight attendant, had been employed with the carrier since 2004, he said.
The plane went down before sunrise and scared residents, who initially thought it was bad weather.
"I really thought it was a big clap of thunder, so (I) didn't think much about it until I heard all the sirens," said one man.
Another man described what he saw from his back door.
"Over the hillside, I saw a flash of light and then an explosion, and then just a big plume of smoke come up," he said.
In Atlanta, Georgia, most of the passengers aboard the crashed plane had planned to connect to other flights and did not have family waiting for them there, the Rev. Harold Boyce, a volunteer chaplain at Hartsfield-Jackson airport, told the AP.
One woman was there expecting her sister on the flight. The two had planned to fly together to catch an Alaskan cruise, he said.
"Naturally, she was very sad," Boyce said. "She was handling it. She was in tears."
NTSB investigators are heading to the crash site to begin an investigation.

I was a little worried when I headed to Club Mate. It wasn’t the sex club-like name—I’ve been burned before—or the fact that Brooklyn isn’t exactly known for its happening nightlife. It was because of the disturbing sadomasochism that seems to have taken over Baltimore’s club scene. I just can’t stand the idea that we should be on our knees thanking clubs for letting us pay exorbitant cover fees to be inside their hallowed halls. And Club Mate, with its VIP area and reserved seating, seemed like a likely spot for this sort of attitude. Instead, Club Mate manages to straddle a very fine line, by making VIPs feel like royalty without making the rest of us feel like serfs.
Finding Club Mate proved surprisingly easy on a recent Friday night—I just followed the strappy heels and flirty skits of a surprising number of sharply dressed club-goers working their way through Brooklyn. But the real surprise came when I realized that Club Mate is housed in the former Thunder Dome—making it a dance club that arose from the ashes of a hair-metal hangout.
As I headed in, one of the door guys asked me if I knew what was going on that evening? I’ve gotten that question before, usually when I take my white girl self to a local club on “urban” night. But it turns out he just wanted to let us know that there would be a large cover because Bobby Valentino was making an appearance. He even offered us VIP passes for another night if we wanted to come back then instead. But my friend is a Bobby Valentino fan, and I get reimbursed for this column, so what did I care? We paid our $20 a piece to get in but decided not to pay the additional fee for access to the VIP area. City Paper isn’t made of money.
The layout of the place is basically the same, but the front bar that used to look like a biker hangout is now a haven of crisp white minimalism, offset by velvety beanbags so large that once you sink into them it seems unlikely you’ll ever get out, especially in heels. The walls of the main room are hung with glowing orange circles that set off the plush booths, tables, and large dance floor. The roped-off staircase to the balcony is guarded by a burly and resolute-looking man. It seems impossible that these posh digs once sported inflatable dolls hanging from the ceiling.
After getting over the initial shock, I headed to the bar. The drinks were pricey but not horrifyingly so. My only real complaint is that getting a cosmo in a plastic cup is just a bit sad. The crowd was mostly, but not exclusively, African-American, and the outfits ranged from team jerseys to white button-downs, jeans to barely there skirts. Everyone was clearly dressed for a night out. With so many different looks, it wasn’t easy to stand out, but one woman managed. Dressed in white with sunglasses perched in her short hair, she made an impression on Club Mate's laid-back dance floor—while the other dancers swayed to midtempo hip-hop, she shook it like it was being banned tomorrow, going into squats that would make a personal trainer jealous. Simultaneously entranced and intimidated by Badunkadunk’s moves, my friend and I edged onto the dance floor, then quickly decided we needed another drink.
At this point, the club was starting to fill up and just getting to the bar in the main room seemed impossible, so we headed to the front bar to try our luck. Before we got there, a man in a baseball cap came up to us, said something about the VIP area that we couldn’t hear over the music, and fastened VIP wristbands on us. Surprised and more than a little bit flattered, we headed to the stairs and the rope was parted.
The VIP area was nice. Tables and couches lined the walls. A buffet was laid out with sweet potatoes and other yummy-looking comfort foods that don’t normally mix well with tight clothes. The drinks came in real glasses and there was even a VVIP section with beds. Not glorified lounge chairs, but fluffy-white-pillowed areas that looked harem-worthy.
Amid the opulence, I learned the truth about the VIP area. The people upstairs, most of whom paid extra money to be above the rabble, spent their entire time glued to the balcony watching the people below dance. And we were no different. The dance floor was now packed, and the swaying had given way to full-blown dancing led by my personal hero, Badunkadunk, who had been pulled onstage by a bouncer to show us all how it’s done. And she didn’t disappoint, dipping down and undulating like a charmed snake. After a while, a girl in a tiny black skirt and a woman in a gold satin gown were brought up as well. They tried to keep up but couldn’t, falling back on girl-on-girl freaking. Badunkadunk didn’t have to pander.
After a while, I realized that my friend and I were doing the we’re-not-dancing dance, our bodies moving a little here and a little there in time to the music. Apparently I wasn’t the only one who noticed. A guy came over and told us it was time for us to stop watching and start doing it. We couldn’t argue, so we followed him down and joined the crush of bodies. We danced the rest of the night, moving with the sea of bodies, under the gaze of those still up in the VIP area.
But as closing time approached, one thing started to bother me. Where was Bobby Valentino? He hadn’t made an appearance all night. Just as we grabbed our pre-last call drink, Valentino took to the stage. While the DJ played his music, he said, “Hi everyone, feel welcome.”

A man suspected in the slaying of 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey nearly a decade ago was arrested today in Thailand, the district attorney said in the long-awaited breakthrough in one of the nation's most lurid unsolved murder cases.
District Attorney Mary Lacey said the arrest followed several months of work. She disclosed no details about the suspect before a news conference scheduled for Thursday.

CBS reported that he is a 41-year-old second-grade teacher and will be brought back to the United States this weekend. Federal officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the man was already being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges.
Ramsey family attorney Lin Wood said in Atlanta that the arrest was vindication for JonBenet's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, who came under suspicion in the slaying.
Wood said the Ramseys learned about the suspect a least a month before Patsy Ramsey's death June 24 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.
"It's been a very long 10 years, and I'm just sorry Patsy isn't here for me to hug her neck," the attorney said.
Wood said that he had been told that the suspect once lived in Conyers, Ga., outside of Atlanta. He would not comment on whether the Ramseys knew him, and he said he knew nothing else about the man. The Ramseys lived in Georgia until 1991; they moved back to Atlanta after their daughter's death.
JonBenet was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family's home in Boulder on Dec. 26, 1996. Patsy Ramsey reported finding a ransom note demanding $118,000 for her daughter.
The image of blonde-haired little JonBenet in child beauty contests dominated TV talk shows afterward, helping feed myriad theories about her killer.
Investigators said at one point that JonBenet's parents were under an "umbrella of suspicion" in the slaying. But the Ramseys insisted an intruder killed their daughter, and no one was ever charged.
In the months after the slaying, Patsy Ramsey went before the cameras, vigorously defending herself and her husband, chastising the media and blasting local law enforcement as incompetent.
In a statement today, John Ramsey said: "Patsy was aware that authorities were close to making an arrest in the case and had she lived to see this day, would no doubt have been as pleased as I am with today's development almost 10 years after our daughter's murder."
In 2003, a federal judge in Atlanta concluded that the evidence she reviewed suggested an intruder killed JonBenet. That opinion came with the judge's decision to dismiss a libel and slander lawsuit against the Ramseys by a freelance journalist, whom the Ramseys had named as a suspect in their daughter's murder. The Boulder district attorney at the time said she agreed with the judge's declaration.
Wood said today's arrest further vindicated his clients.
"I am sure there were still doubts in the minds of individuals whose thinking had been poisoned against this family because of the years of false accusations," Wood said.
"Today is additional vindication of the family, but I think that knowledgeable individuals familiar with the evidence in the case have known for many years that this family was falsely accused, that they were innocent and that what they lived through in the last 10 years was an American tragedy."
Wood said he and the Ramseys "have been totally amazed and impressed with the professionalism of law enforcement" under Lacey's direction. Lacey became district attorney in 2001.
Law enforcement officials from Boulder were flying to Bangkok to present Thai authorities with documents in the slaying, officials in Washington said. They asked to remain anonymous pending an announcement in Colorado.

A 15-year-old Soldotna girl is crediting her dog with saving her from a would-be abductor along the Kenai Spur Highway near Kenai on Tuesday evening.
According to Alaska State Troopers, the girl — whose name was not being released — was walking her American bulldog, Tank, along the bike path near Mooring Drive between 5:45 and 6 p.m. when a man grabbed her and tried to force her into his truck.
The man, described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall, with short dark hair, brown eyes, dark complexion and being clean-shaven, reportedly grabbed the girl’s arm and tried to force her into his pickup truck.
The victim told troopers her dog bit the man on the arm giving her time to escape his grasp.
She said the man, who was in his early to mid-30s, got back into his truck and slammed the door on the dog in an attempt to get away.
She said she called off her dog and they both ran home.
The girl described the truck as a black, older model Chevrolet with an extended cab and an open, short bed.
Troopers are asking anyone who may have more information about the suspect to call troopers at 262-4453 or Crime Stoppers at 283-8477.
The victim’s father said Wednesday the girl had bruises on her arm where she had been grabbed.
The father also said the dog, which weighs about 100 pounds, appeared somber and traumatized by the incident, as though he did something wrong.
“I’ve never seen him like this. He’s normally very upbeat,” he said. “If he bit that guy’s arm, the guy’s got some damage.”
The father said immediately following the attack, the girl, her older brother and the parents drove around the area for about an hour trying unsuccessfully to find the assailant.
“We called police while we were driving,” he said.
On Wednesday, trooper Lt. Peter Mlynarik said investigators are reinterviewing the girl and are taking the report seriously at this time.
Mlynarik said no other similar incidents have been reported in the Kenai-Soldotna area recently.

One of the two suspects in a series of apparently random late-night killings discarded a trash bag in which police found a map with red and blue dots representing the locations of the attacks.
The bag also contained an expended .410-gauge shotgun shell and a piece of paper referring to serial violence, according to a probable cause statement released Friday night.
The trash bag had been tossed into a bin at the suburban Mesa apartment complex where Dale S. Hausner and Samuel John Dieteman lived, the report said. The men, accused of shooting two dozen people, including six fatally, were arrested late Thursday after police tailed them for a week.

Andy Bucholz of G2 Tactics has suggested that mobile license plate reading (LPR) or ANPR (Automated Number Plate Recognition) will go mainstream. (More background on G2 Tactics). He is of course hoping that he can mass market his company's technology. This lead him to make the following statements which appeared in Wired News:
a vision of the future in which LPR does everything from helping insurance companies find missing cars to letting retail chains chart customer migrations. It could also let a nosy citizen with enough cash find out if the mayor is having an affair, he says.
Giant data-tracking firms such as ChoicePoint, Accurint and Acxiom already collect detailed personal and financial information on millions of Americans. Once they discover how lucrative it is to know where a person goes between the supermarket, for example, and the strip club, the LPR industry could explode, says Bucholz.
Private detectives would want the information. So would repo men or bail bondsmen. And the government, which often contracts out personal data collection -- in part, so it doesn't have to deal with Freedom of Information Act requests -- might encourage it.
Not surprisingly, this hyperbole has resulted in a great deal of attention, such as a Slashdot article. I think this vision is unrealistic and really leads people to wonder why we don't have regulation. I think any steps towards wholesale use of smart cameras by insurance companies and data-tracking firms will lead to strong support for regulation relating to privacy and surveillance.

Baltimore Experience

A story that discusses Philadelphia's move towards widespread video surveillance. The best part of the article discusses the Baltimore surveillance experience. Couple of key points:
* Drug-forfeiture money and contributions from the Department of Homeland Security paid for Baltimore's $10-million camera program, officials said. But taxpayers will have to pick up the estimated $600,000 annual tab to keep the cameras rolling.
* About 170 fixed cameras, known as "hardwires," are permanently mounted atop light poles in six of the nine Baltimore police districts. The hardwires cost $25,000 apiece. Patrol cops are stationed near the cameras, and the recorded images are monitored inside police stations across the city, usually by retired police officers. The images are stored for 30 days on computer hard drives.
* The portable blue-lit cameras are nicknamed "the pod" and cost $20,000. Officers view the pod's images from a screen enclosed in a black briefcase inside their squad cars. One briefcase can link to many nearby pods. Only pods, and not fixed cameras, feature the flashing blue light. Police said the pod's main goal is to quickly quell crime.
* Baltimore police said they have seen an average 17 percent drop in crime in the areas where the cameras were installed.
* More than 1,400 arrests based on camera images have been made since January, Cassella said. The majority of the arrests have been for minor crimes (carrying marijuana, littering, etc.), according to Baltimore prosecutors. Margaret Burns, spokeswoman for the Baltimore prosecutor's office, calculated that from December through May, only one of every six arrests made through use of the cameras resulted in a guilty verdict. She blamed the low number of convictions on the "grainy" images the cameras usually produce. Burns said prosecutors have a hard time telling the difference between a "cigarette and a blunt" when watching a recording.
Poseidon Systems offers smart camera technology for drowning detection. It relies on underwater cameras and a processor that analyzes/tracks swimmers in real-time. They have press releases stating that their system helped detect near drownings. Here is a screen shot from their web site:

Arms Race over Speed Cameras

NAVTEQ is offering a Camera Alert feature in their vehicle navigation system. It has data (which is updated monthly) on the location of speed cameras. This allows drivers:
to get from A to B while being told via clear, concise voice alerts to avoid potential hazards such as speed cameras, speed limits and many officially designated accident blackspots. From the NAVTEQ newsletter
I am sure this will go over big in the UK, which has lots of speed cameras. But it highlights a potential arms race between navigational systems that cater to drivers and governments that don't want to publicize the location of cameras.
Criminals simply avoid cameras
Inspired by the Cincinnati Post:
Its something sociologists have long recognized, but its talked about very little. When cameras go up in one area, some crime may just move to another area. The term for this is displacement.
"We've never really gotten anything useful from them," said Cincinnati Police Capt. Kimberly Frey. With hopes that they would be a boon for crime-fighting, the city first installed video cameras in 1998. By 2000, their utility was already in doubt. A review by the University of Cincinnati that year found the devices accomplished little beyond shifting criminals out of areas under the lens into unwatched spots, where they resumed their illegal activities.
While the police captain is shaking his head, the academic review provides some key insights. Some of results of the study were published in Security Journal by Mazerolle, Hurley, and Chamlin (I believe the Cincinnati study was done for David Hurley's dissertation):
Our study of CCTV in Cincinnati found that surveillance cameras create somewhat of an initial deterrent effect in the month, perhaps two months, following implementation. We conclude that erecting signs to notify people about the cameras could possibly increase the level of deterrence of CCTV. Signs about CCTV cameras in operation would also address some of the fairness issues raised by civil libertarians. We also suggest that shifting CCTV cameras around on a frequent basis could solve two dilemmas: first, it would increase the number of hotspots under surveillance, and hence remove some of the inequities observed in CCTV deployment; second, short and periodic, as opposed to permanent, deployment of CCTV cameras would capitalize upon some of the initial deterrent effects of the cameras that are observed in our data.
